The Iowa Central Men's Basketball team will return to the hardwood to open the 2017-2018 season on Thursday night. The Tritons will take on Grand View University with start time at 7:30 p.m. Dennis Pilcher returns for his 39th year as Head Coach of Iowa Central. He welcomes back four letter winners from a year ago with two of them getting significant playing time as freshman. Tray Croft and Robert Hawkins will be leaned on heavily as 12 freshman make up the rest of the roster. Tray returns from a freshman year where he broke the all-time single season scoring record with 774 points. Tray shot 45% overall from the floor in leading the Tritons in scoring with an average of 24 points per game. Robert Hawkins is the other sophomore who returns on the varsity team, seeing action in 23 games a year ago. Robert's steady improvement throughout the spring and fall seasons has definitely helped him in earning more minutes this winter. "I really like our guys and their attitudes. They have worked hard all fall and the early part of the practice season. We have played well in our scrimmages since the JUCO Jamboree against Grand View University and Waldorf University. Now the games are for real so we have to continue to work hard and make progress to become a better basketball team. Our schedule is going to definitely challenge us to be better." stated Pilcher
Iowa Central will play 31 regular season games with 14 of those games at home. "Our schedule is a challenging one with the non-conference games and then obviously our conference games. Our conference once again will be tough as always. There are some good players returning and then add in some talented freshman, it's going to be a challenge night in and night out," stated Pilcher. "Having Tray and Robert back has helped us but we need the freshman to continue to get better as well to be consistent in the league. If we can do that, I like our team." Pilcher said. "Three freshman have really stood out so far this fall. Dallas Bailey from Denver, CO, Royshawn Webb from Cedar Rapids, IA and Collin Shannon from Ankeny, IA have done a tremendous job working. All three do a lot of good things for the team and I hope they continue to do so. That will only help take some of the burden off Croft a bit."
Following the Grand View game, Iowa Central will hit the road and face Marshalltown Community College in Marshalltown on Monday, November 6th. Game time there will be at 7:00 p.m. To find more information on Iowa Central, please visit our website at www.ictritons.com.
