Head Coach Brent Nelson will enter his 4th year at the helm of Triton Rugby in 2019. Once again the Tritons will look to play some of the very best teams in the country as they navigate an independent schedule. Teams slated for competition are Iowa State, Wisconsin, Lindenwood, Davenport, Arkansas State, Notre Dame College and two matches versus Belleville. Triton Rugby will compete in D2 again this year after a 3rd place this past season. In the three years of existence, the Tritons have moved up a division as they continue to push their own level of play. To date, the Tritons have not finished any lower than 3rd in 15s with a NSCRO National Championship in their 2nd year. Although their 2018 regular season record was 2-5 the Tritons were allowed an at-large bid by USA Rugby. They fought their way to Charlotte, NC where the Tritons were beaten in the semi-finals by eventual National Champion…NC State. Playoff victories along the way included IUPUI, Vermont, NDSU and Queens University.
The Tritons’ 7s campaign was also very successful this past season. Although they were plagued by injuries early in the spring the Tritons’ depth helped them to favorable tournament showings. A healthy Triton Rugby squad took the field at the Upper Midwest national qualifying tourney in mid-April…and they didn’t disappoint. Triton Rugby went 5-0 on the day and punched their ticket to the USA Rugby D2 National Championships. Traveling to Tucson, AZ was a great experience for the young team as they took a day between training to see the Grand Canyon. Once on the pitch, the favored Tritons survived day one in the heat with a 2-1 record. They entered day two and beat Principia in the QFs but lost to NC State again in the semis. The Tritons would go out with a win as they beat East Carolina to claim 3rd.
Brent Nelson is originally from Humboldt, IA and was a 4 sport athlete in high school. He continued his athletic career at Iowa Central playing basketball for legendary coach Dennis Pilcher and considers himself a Triton to the core. He spends his very little free time playing golf. Nelson is also active in the community and has his teams active as well. Coach Nelson is a 200 level USA Rugby Certified Coach with a concussion protocol endorsement and is honored to be the first ever head coach of Triton Rugby.
Nelson started playing rugby for the Iowa Falls Rugby Football Club in 2000. Although he was introduced to rugby later in life, Coach Nelson instantly fell in love with the sport and it became his passion. He has since worked tirelessly to advance the sport of rugby whether at the club level or now here at Iowa Central as the only varsity rugby program in the country at a community college. Coach Nelson likes to employ a solid, ball control yet attacking style of play in 15’s and an aggressive, fast-paced style in 7’s with an emphasis on restarts and ball possession. Nelson will look to continue to advance his teams into upper divisions from D2 and beyond.
