Head Coach Brent Nelson finishes his 2nd year at the helm of Triton Rugby. Last year the Tritons were the National Runners-Up in the NSCRO Challenge Cup Division while going 12-3 on the year. They also won numerous 7s tournaments and fell just shy of the 7s national championships. This year the Tritons moved up to the Champions Cup level and dominated the opposition. In the spring the Tritons won their first NSCRO 15s national championship and finished their 15s campaign with a 15-2 record. Showing that they aren’t afraid to take on big names, the Tritons also played D1A opponents Lindenwood and Arkansas State.
The Tritons’ 7s campaign turned out to be highly successful as well. They won a CRC 7s automatic qualifier at the Heart of America tournament that brought them national recognition. Triton 7s also won two other tournaments and the NSCRO qualifier in Des Moines, IA. This lead them to the national championships where they fell just short of a “double” and settled for 3rd in the nation. The Tritons’ 7s team only lost one match and tied one other while dominating their 7s season.
Nelson started playing rugby for the Iowa Falls Rugby Football Club in 2000. Although he was introduced to rugby later in life, Coach Nelson instantly fell in love with the sport and it became his passion. He has since worked tirelessly to advance the sport of rugby whether at the club level or now here at Iowa Central. Coach Nelson likes to employ a solid, ball control yet attacking style of play in 15’s and an aggressive, fast-paced style in 7’s with an emphasis on restarts and ball possession. Triton Rugby has operated under the umbrella of NSCRO (National Small College Rugby Organization). Nelson will look to continue to advance his teams into upper divisions and a move to D2 or beyond. The Tritons were also brand new members of the prominent Northern Lights Conference this past year.
Brent Nelson is originally from Humboldt, IA and was a 4 sport athlete in high school. He continued his athletic career at Iowa Central playing basketball for legendary coach Dennis Pilcher and considers himself a Triton to the core. Coach Nelson is a 200 level USA Rugby Certified Coach with a concussion protocol endorsement and is honored to be the first ever rugby coach of Triton Rugby.
