DES MOINES — Courtney Lindsey knew he had the ability to secure gold at the Drake Relays Friday in the 200-meter dash.

What surprised the Iowa Central freshman was the time flashing on the scoreboard inside Drake Stadium.

Lindsey went 20.56 to best Iowa junior Antonio Woodard on the blue oval, with Hawkeye Karayme Bartley placing third and Kentucky's Jacob Smith fourth.

"The win (didn't surprise me), but the time, yes," Lindsey said. "I wasn't doing too good in the 200 this year and that finally put my confidence up for competing at nationals."

Lindsey was placed on the outside in lane eight, which "made me feel like I was in front, so I had to stay in front." He also qualified for the 100-meter dash final with a prelim time of 10.39.

His victory was part of a strong day for the Tritons, as Akeem Bradshaw, Olivier Soglohun and Jadon Watson all earned Top-7 finishes.

Bradshaw was fifth in the triple jump after leaping 49-6.5, with Soglohun placing sixth with the same jump. Watson cleared 6-9.75 for seventh in the high jump.

The Iowa Central 4×800 of Mel Obadiah, Thomas Bryant, Denzelle Anglin and Thursday's steeplechase Drake Relays champion Awet Yohannes finished 11th in 7:53.53.

Ethan Smith, Phemelo Matlhabe, Demetrius Lassiter and Bryant clocked a time of 3:12.97 to secure a spot in the 4×400 relay finals on Saturday.

Lindsey, Lassiter, Smith and Obadiah placed 11th in the sprint medley, finishing in 3:30.54.
