It was a big weekend for Triton Track & Field this weekend as they competed in both the Drake Relays and Simpson College Kip Janvrin Open. At the Drake Relays the Tritons captured three gold medals. Awet Yohannes started the Tritons off on Thursday with a Steeplechase win. His time of 8:55.18 was the fastest time in the NJCAA so far this year and the 3rd fastest time in school history.
Courtney Lindsey had a big meet, taking home the title in both the 100 meter and 200 meter races. Lindsey's time of 20.56 in the 200 was a new Drake Relays record and was the 2nd fastest time in the NJCAA this season as well as the 2nd fastest time in school history. Lindsey's winning time in the 100 was 10.34.
Other highlights at Drake included the Men's 4 x 400 team of Ethan Smith (47.3), Phemelo Matlhabe (48.3), Demetrius Lassiter (49.4), and Thomas Bryant (47.8) in 3:12.97, which was the 8th fastest time in school history.
Jadon Watson's 7th placing High Jump of 32.08m/6-09.75ft was the 6th highest in School History. Akeem Bradshaw's 5th placing Triple Jump of 15.10m/49-06.50ft and Olivier Soglohun's 6th placing Triple Jump of the same distance was the 4th longest in school history.
Over at Simpson College, highlights included Kris Brown's winning performance in the Men's 100 Meter Dash (10.51) which was a meet record; Florance Uwajeneza finished 3rd in the Women's 1500 meter run (4:38.97), which was the fastest time in the NJCAA this season and the 2nd fastest time in school history; Maddie Schmoker's 3rd place throw in the Hammer (47.28/155-01ft) was the 7th furthest in school history.
The Tritons had 5 new National Qualifiers this weekend:
-Innocent Murwanashyaka in the Steeplechase (9:36.79) – 8th fastest in the NJCAA this season.
-Lilian Busienei in the Steeplechase (10:56.32) – fastest in the NJCAA this season and 3rd fastest in school history.
-Winrose Chesang in the 5000 Meter Run (16:33.35) – fastest in the NJCAA this season and 3rd fastest in school history.
-Awet Yohannes in the Steeplechase (8:55.18) – fastest in the NJCAA this season and 3rd fastest in school history.
-Akeem Bradshaw in the Triple Jump (15.10m/49-06.50ft) – 9th furthest in the NJCAA this season and 4th furthest in school history.
The Tritons now move to postseason with the Region XI Meet taking place in Council Bluffs this week. Multi Events are scheduled for the 28th and 29th with the regular events taking place May 4th and 5th.
