The long wait for the season opener finally came on Friday January, 25th down in Clearwater, Florida. On the 24th The Lady Tritons flew out of Kansas City at 7:25 a.m. and arrived around 10:30 a.m. to 70 degree temperature. After a practice in the afternoon and a little beach time and a huge pasta dinner, the Tritons were ready to play ball. The team was anxious to see the 11 new freshmen play along with the 7 returning sophomores.
Game 1 was versus Pasco Hernando who had defeated the Tritons last year 6-0 down here. This time around was a different story as the Tritons dominated the whole game winning 8-3. Sophomore Kallie Malloy went the distance on the mound throwing a 6 hitter striking out 4. The Tritons played great defense along the way. Bre Tjebben led the team going 3-4 with 5 RBI's and two homeruns. Parker Mathews and Sophia Cave each had 2 hits apiece. Cheyenne Andersen added a solo homerun.
Game 2 was against a very good St. John's River State team but the Tritons got the sweep in day 1 winning 11-9. Bre Tjebben recorded the win on the mound going 3 2/3 in relief. Leading hitters were Mathews going 3-5 and with Andersen and Tjebben getting 2 hits a piece.
The second game of the day was against Tallahassee CC. The Tritons won 6-3 in a close game all the way. McKenzie Capesius got her first collegiate win going 4 1/3 innings giving up 8 hits and 3 runs. Bre Tjebben got the save in relief going 2 2/3 retiring all 8 batters she faced. Leading hitters were Mathews and Tjebben both getting 3 hits a piece.
Day 3 saw the whole day washed out as it rained all day long. All in all a very good trip. The Tritons defeated all 3 teams from Florida they faced. After not seeing dirt, sun or grass it was nice to finally play and the girls responded very well. Next action for the Tritons is February 15th and 16th in Fort Worth, Texas.
