The Iowa Central women closed out 2017 by reaching the break-even mark, scoring a 69-55 victory over Little Priest Tribal here Saturday afternoon.

Rachel Toto and Mardaeja Cross each scored 12 points for the Tritons (7-7 overall), who will enter the new year having won four of their last six and with momentum for head coach Kelly Kruger.

Cross added eight rebounds and five assists, with Brittany West recording nine points, six boards and four assists.

After falling behind early, Iowa Central used a 15-3 run in the second half to pull ahead and stay there vs. the Warriors (5-9).

"We really kind of looked clueless early on," Kruger said. "Like we weren't really sure of anything. But at the end of the first half and in the fourth, we took a step in the right direction. We knocked down some 3-pointers and that gave us some life.

"It wasn't a thing of beauty. It's not something you'd box and sell for a million dollars; you might get a buck 50 for it, but winning is hard."

For Kruger, these first 14 games gave him the chance to see players in different spots. Former Fort Dodge Senior High standout Justice Crooks suffered an ankle injury in the opener and is out for the season.

Avery Terwilliger, an ex-Humboldt standout, had to sit the first half of the year after transferring from Wartburg College. She'll be eligible to play when the Tritons return in January.

"I feel like we underachieved, but we've had those issues to battle through," Kruger said. "Losing Justice was tough because she'd have been a main cog to what we wanted to do and that threw us for a loop.

"But slowly, we're getting there."

Sarah Rolling added eight points and nine rebounds in the win, with Emma O'Donoghue scoring eight points. Kryssie Okinaka, a member of the volleyball team in the fall, had six points, five rebounds and two assists.

Iowa Central will face the Luther JV on January 2 at home to begin the new year.
