Sophomores Take Lead Against the Bears on Their Night

Sarah Rolling and Rachel Toto are the only sophomore holdovers from Kelly Kruger's first recruiting class at Iowa Central.

The duo helped the Tritons stay in position to place as high as third in the ICCAC with a 59-54 victory over Des Moines Area here Wednesday night inside Hodges Fieldhouse.

Rolling scored 13 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, and Toto added 10 points, four assists and four boards. Freshman Brittany West led Iowa Central (15-14 overall, 7-6 in league) with 16 points, including nine consecutive at one point.

With only one game left in the regular season, the Tritons are tied for third with Southeastern (20-9, 7-6) and the Bears (20-10, 7-6). This, though, completed a season sweep of DMACC for Kruger's bunch.

"It's big," he said. "We've got to take care of business at Ellsworth on Saturday, but this was a big one. We had a lot of great individual efforts including those from Brittany, Rachel, Sarah and Avery (Terwilliger)."

Rolling, a standout at North Union before coming to Iowa Central, scored all 13 of her points in the second half.

"Being a Triton basketball player has given me so much more than just playing," she said. "It's showed me how to be responsible, what a true leader is and what it takes to step up when needed. Playing for Coach Kruger has been an honor and I have learned so many things from him in both basketball and life."

As the lone returning players, Rolling and Toto knew there would be growing experiences early on. Iowa Central has won two in a row and is 5-3 over its last eight down the stretch.

"With so many freshmen this year, I knew that I would have to step up and show leadership right away,"Rolling said. "These girls knew I played for Coach Kruger before, so they were pretty understanding and I pushed them, but they also pushed me in good ways.

"Coach Kruger always told me that I am blessed to be a part of something bigger than myself. I have been forever grateful for that."

Toto helped carry the scoring in the first half, accounting for eight. She also recorded two of Iowa Central's nine steals.

"We have developed such a strong bond for our team both inside and outside of basketball," Toto said. "We are so close with one another and that's something I'll miss a lot."

The Tritons conclude the season on Saturday at Ellsworth (8-20, 2-11). The Panthers fell to second-ranked Kirkwood last night, 78-42.
