The Iowa Central Volleyball team headed over to the Central (NE) CC Tournament in Columbus, Nebraska this weekend and was matched up with two teams ranked in the top 10, and two others team that have both been ranked in the top 20 earlier this year.
First up for the Tritons was a rematch with KCKCC. The Tritons won the first match-up with KCK two weeks ago down in Kansas City, in a hard fought three set win. The Blue Devils were looking for revenge and came out on fire, taking the first set 25-23 after the Tritons had to climb back after starting in a large hole. The Tritons settled into their game plan in set 2, winning 25-11, and then finishing the match in 4, 25-23, 25-18. Gabby Sullivan and Kayla Faldet led the Triton offense with 17 and 13 kills respectively. Faldet led all attackers with a .409 efficiency on 22 swings. Abby Lohrmann had 39 assists, while Sullivan added 3 aces. Kryssie Okinaka, who started her first matches at libero this weekend (as the Tritons were without regular starter Michele O'Haver for the tournament), led the Triton defense with 26 digs. Hannah Murray added 15 digs while Lohrmann chipped in 14 and Liza Hatcher 13. Kayla Faldet led the blockers with 8, Libby Zorn added 6, and Lexi Green and Murray had 5.
Next up for the Tritons was the Fort Scott Greyhounds. Fort Scott, who was ranked as high as #8 earlier this season, came flying out of the gates, using a fast-paced offense and precision passing to make it tough on the Tritons, winning 25-13. The Tritons caught up to speed, taking set 2 25-17. Sets 3 and 4 were back and forth battles, with Fort Scott winning set 3 25-22, and then Iowa Central coming from behind to take set 4 26-24. The 5th set did not go the Tritons way, falling 8-15. Gabby Sullivan led the offense with 27 kills on a record breaking 81 swings. Libby Zorn added 16 kills, hitting at a .361 clip. Abby Lohrmann had 44 assists and the lone ace serve for the match. Kryssie Okinaka had an impressive 36 digs, Hannah Murray added 21, and Liza Hatcher 18. Lexi Green and Gabby Sullivan led the blockers with 4 apiece.
First up for the Tritons on Saturday was the 2nd of 3 meetings with #8 Cowley. Cowley, who is 27-1 in its last 28 matches, had an incredible offensive game, hitting at a .429 clip as a team. The Tritons could not respond, falling in 3, 25-19, 25-20, 25-15. Gabby Sullivan and Libby Zorn led the offense with 12 and 11 kills respectively. Abby Lohrmann had 21 assists. Kryssie Okinaka led the defense with 15 digs, and Kayla Faldet added 3 blocks.
Last match of the weekend paired the Tritons with the host school, Central (NE) CC. The Raiders were ranked #5 in last week's National Rankings. The Tritons had a great match offensively, hitting at a .279 clip as a team, with 8 different players registering 3 or more kills. Gabby Sullivan and Libby Zorn once again led the offense with 26 and 16 kills respectively. Abby Lohrmann had a season high 57 assists and her team leading 14th double-double with 18 digs. Kryssie Okinaka had 26 digs while Hannah Murray added 19. Liza Hatcher and Lohrmann had 3 aces apiece. Kayla Faldet and Sullivan led the blockers with 5 each.
The Tritons are now 21-6 on the season. Next up is a conference match-up with Kirkwood. The Tritons and the Eagles are both tied for the ICCAC lead with 5-0 conference records.
