The 2020 Summer Olympics were a culmination of a long, long process for many athletes, including former Iowa Central swimmer Judith Meauri.

Meauri competed in the 50-meter freestyle, winning her heat in a time of 27.56, which was fastest among all swimmers competing in the first four heats of the event. She placed 53rd overall, as Australia's Emma McKeon went on to capture gold.

"Tokyo has put together a fantastic Olympic Games despite a pandemic," Meauri said on Facebook. "I would not have gotten this far without the help and support of my swimming (PNGSI) and Olympic (PNGOC) federations, also FINA for the opportunity to train at one of their training centers based in Phuket, Thailand."

From 2011-12, Meauri swam for Iowa Central. She also competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics, placing 47th overall while representing her home country of Papua New Guinea.

"This journey has certainly been a tough one," Meauri said. "Having to battle an illness for two years and just as I managed to get back on my feet, I had to leave home for 18 months. All those challenges have finally paid off.

"Dreams take a lot of hard work, dedication and determination to come true."

Meauri also offered her "thanks to my No. 1 support team; coaches, mentors, friends and most importantly, my parents. To everyone who watched on TV wherever you are, I can't thank you all enough. My love to you all."
