It was another memorable season on the court for the Iowa Central volleyball program.
The Tritons claimed their third consecutive ICCAC regular season title, advancing to nationals where they would place a program-best third in the country.
Sara Horn's group overcame some in-season adversity, finishing atop the stacked ICCAC Div. II standings that included four teams ranked in the Top-10.
After winning the Region XI-A crown, Iowa Central advanced to the semifinals at nationals. They finished off their run with a five-set victory over Illinois Central in Cedar Rapids.
"I'm super proud of the sophomores and captains for leading this team in the right direction and for working their tails off in the craziest year we've all ever had," head coach Sara Horn said.
Alesha Johnson, conference player of the year, and Kealey Anderson each were named NJCAA All-Americans. The two were also named by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, becoming just the third and fourth Tritons to be honored by the group as All-American players.
"I am so proud of what Kealey and Alesha have accomplished," Horn said. "They put in the work and are being rewarded for the long hours and extra time they committed to getting better and helping the team reach new heights."
Gabby Sullivan was named the top assistant coach by the AVCA.
"One of Gabby's biggest strengths is just how selfless she is and her willingness to do whatever it takes to help our players succeed, not only on the court and in the classroom but in their personal lives as well," Horn said. "Gabby was a fantastic player and captain for us a few years ago, so it's no surprise she's been able to step into this role seamlessly. We're pretty lucky to have her here!"
Sullivan, who earned All-American honors playing for Horn and Iowa Central, returned to the program because of the core values instilled in her under Horn.
"Playing for Sara was a super influential experience in my life but being able to switch roles and coach alongside her has been nothing short of just as influential," Sullivan said. "Everything this program is credited to the time and effort she puts not only into the program but every athlete as an individual. This past year has been eventful and hard on everyone - but one thing I'm sure of is that our team was able to handle it with so much grace because of the way she leads. She exudes selflessness and compassion with everything she does and our team, myself included, is truly being lead by one of the greatest."
