Tritons sweep postseason awards

Iowa Central swept through ICCAC Div. II volleyball action on its way to a fourth consecutive regular season crown.

The league took note of the effort by the Tritons, as they also swept the postseason awards.

Alesha Johnson took home player of the year honors for a second straight year, Brooke Dobson kept the top newcomer title at Iowa Central and Sara Horn was awarded for leading it all as coach of the year.

Nine Tritons made the all-conference team and five were named all-region.

Johnson, who was tabbed player of the year in the spring after helping Iowa Central to a third place finish at nationals, is currently second in the NJCAA in assists and leads the conference. She is the first player to repeat as player of the year in the ICCAC.

She also has 69 total blocks, 56 serving aces, 322 digs and 63 kills. Johnson is averaging almost 11 assists per set.

"It was a huge surprise," said Johnson, of being named player of the year. "There's a lot of great girls in the conference and I honestly put myself out of the running because everyone is so good. It's a big honor and for Coach Horn and Brooke to also get it says a lot about our program."

Dobson followed Angel Baylark with being named freshman of the year. She has 323 kills, 99 total blocks and 55 digs.

"Alesha and Brooke join some really great players in our program who have won player of the year and freshman of the year awards," Horn said. "For Brooke to step onto a team that has as much experience as we have back and to be one of our kill and block leaders, and to be someone who we look to score in some big time matches, shows just how good of a player she is. Alesha had a great season last spring, but she elevated her game even more and has given us consistent leadership and execution this entire season, and all of the conference coaches agreed that she deserves this award once again."

Joining Johnson and Dobson on the first team all-conference list were Baylark and Katilyn Steffes. Second team selections included Haley Alharithy, Jori Hajek and Baylyn Johnson with Bailey Dugan and Bria Sandifer making honorable mention.

Alesha Johnson, Baylark and Steffes were first team all-region, Dobson and Baylyn Johnson made the second-team.

"We are really proud of all of our award winners," Horn said. "We had a lot of award winners this year, and that is definitely contributed to their work ethic, talents and individual contributions to the team but we wouldn't get the majority of these awards without the success of the team. Everyone on our roster should feel pride in these awards, because the better your team does, the more shots you have at individual awards."
