The second-ranked Iowa Central volleyball team has all the tools to make a run to the national championship.
One of those key pieces is sophomore Alesha Johnson, the reigning two-time ICCAC Player of the Year.
As one of several returning players from a year ago when the Tritons finished a program-best third at the NJCAA Div. II Championships, Johnson understands what it will take.
Iowa Central (40-1 overall) will open play on Thursday in Cedar Rapids against Mott at 11 a.m.
"I think many of us returners know what to expect with nationals regarding the atmosphere but we're excited to see how each game will go," Johnson said. "We know there can be upsets, we know it'll be a fight but that's expected. We all want it and we know we have to go grab it instead of wait on our heels.
"I'm very excited, and I know the team is. We have to take it one game at a time and can't overlook anyone. It's going to be a fun week, I can't wait to see how we do."
Johnson directs the offense, recording 1,455 assists on the year. She also has 63 kills, 69 total blocks and 322 digs.
Over the regular season, Iowa Central knocked off Parkland when they were No. 1 and held that spot for several weeks. They also claimed another ICCAC title and scored a second regional crown.
"This experience was different because we did have our season in the spring which was nice especially since we had so many girls coming back. It brought the bond closer and we all were excited for the incoming class and to see how far we could go this year," Johnson said. "Being a favorite shows how much work we've all put in but it does put a target on our back. Almost every team we've played plays their best game against us.
"It really makes any game fun to play and we come in with a different focus to each one but in the end it's just to get better."
