Tritons Secure First National Championship at NJCAA National Duals
Traveling to Poteau, OK and the NJCAA Women's Coaches Association National Duals for the first time in program history, Triton Head Coach, Zak Hensley knew his Tritons would be ready.
"This group has been pushing each other to new heights and working nonstop since September," said Hensley. "We knew what the team could do together, and they showed it!"
Following a first-round bye, the Tritons would defeat #5 Southeast (34-18) and #2 Carl Albert State (33-18) to set up a showdown with conference rival, #7 Iowa Western in the finals. The Tritons would win six matches in the finals to secure a 32-20 victory and the national championship.
"Everyone who stepped on the mat did a great job of wrestling hard in all positions and looked to score points," said Hensley. "The team also did a really great job of creating bonus points for us."
The Tritons were led by Annabelle Petsinger, Avery Mohr, and Delise Villa who all went undefeated on the day.
"Everyone on the roster played a large role in our success and made the win possible," added Hensley. "It was a great weekend. I'm very proud of our Tritons!"
The Tritons are back in action on Saturday, February 1st at the Grand View Open in Des Moines. Wrestling begins at 9:00 AM.
